Plenty of adventure in South and Central America by Dipika Patel
If you are after an adventure on your next break abroad, look no further than Central and South America.
This part of the world is perfect for exploring – whether you are keen to get a first-hand glimpse of the remains of ancient cultures, go zip-lining above the canopy of a cloud forest or experience the thrilling sight and sound of ice cracking from the Perito Moreno glacier, you are sure to have a break to remember in Costa Rica, Mexico or Patagonia.
If you are looking to get back to nature, Costa Rica tours may be the perfect escape for you. Nearly one-quarter of the country’s land is protected by the government and you’ll have the opportunity to experience its rich biodiversity firsthand with a visit to one of Costa Rica’s many national parks.
Among the must-see sights you’ll want to add to your diary is the stunning Monteverde cloud forest – its altitude of 1,440 metres separates it from traditional rainforest classification – where you will be able to get a firsthand glimpse of the region’s stunning range of plant and animal life. This internationally-recognised area of biodiversity can be explored on foot or horseback, but to get a really unique perspective on the area, why not try zip-lining through the forest canopy above?
Elsewhere in Costa Rica, the Arenal volcano and national park is well worth a visit. One of the world’s most active volcanoes, Arenal puts on an umissable nightly display of glowing rock and spurting lava.
You’ll also want to spend a bit of time in the vibrant capital city of San Jose to get a true glimpse of local life in Costa Rica. More than half of the country’s population calls this city home and you will find a wide range of markets, cultural attractions and museums to keep you entertained – as well as some of the finest coffee served anywhere in the world!
If you are a history buff or simply love a holiday with plenty of variety, Mexico tours could be well worth considering. A number of different itineraries are available for touring this fascinating nation and you are sure to find one that suits your interests and abilities.
For the most in-depth look at ancient Mayan culture, you may want to concentrate most of your time in the stunning Yucatan region. This area is home to some of the most important archaeological sites in Mexico, including the well-preserved ruins at Chichen Izta, the El Castillo pyramid, the Temple of Inscriptions at Palenque and other temple ruins at Uxmal.
However, you may find that you’d like to see more of the country, in which case a coast-to-coast itinerary may be a wise choice. Mexico has Pacific, Atlantic and Caribbean coastlines and you will be able to compare and contrast all three on this type of adventure.
Your travels will take you from Mayan ruins to the colonial city of San Cristobal. You’ll also be able to enjoy a boat tour of the stunning Sumidero Canyon before relaxing in the sand on one of Mexico’s famous Caribbean beaches near Cancun.
For something completely different, Patagonia is a far-flung destination that provides the perfect setting for an adventure holiday.
The southernmost tip of South America is a land of stunning contrasts – with its flat, arid plains, lush forests, rocky mountains and spectacular glaciers, you are sure to find the landscape fascinating.
Patagonia is frequently hailed as a land of extremes and nowhere is that claim proven better than the Torres del Paine National Park. The protected area has been a Unesco Biosphere Reserve since 1978 and its craggy mountains, glacial lakes and acclaimed ice fields are perfect for exploring – and you are sure to snap some spectacular photographs as you tour the park.
The exciting Tierra del Fuego, a region jointly-owned by Chile and Argentina, is also well worth a visit. This area is home to the former penal colony of Ushuaia, which is the world’s southernmost town. Snow and ice-capped mountains are visible here all year-round – even in the height of the Southern Hemisphere’s summer season.
No matter where you choose to explore, you are sure to have a brilliant adventure break in Central or South America. Start planning your getaway to Mexico, Patagonia or Costa Rica today!
